We come to the final “I am” statement in John. The scene is the last supper. This is the last meal Jesus will share with his disciples, and during the dinner conversation Jesus shares this extended metaphor about the vine and the branches. In John’s gospel, the Last Supper begins all the way back in chapter 13 and goes all the way to chapter 17. However, in the midst of this farewell speech, Jesus verbally paints this beautiful picture of their relationship.
