In Matthew 5:13 Jesus says something that describes the kind of relationship we are to have with the world, “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is the salt if it has lost its flavor?”

Why would Jesus use a rock, a mineral to describe how we should be in the world? We all know that everything tastes better with salt, but salt has other qualities that made it play such a crucial role in human history– abilities so powerful it helped shape the modern world. The world we know would not exist without salt. When we understand the importance of salt to those Jesus first made this statement to, we will understand what Jesus is saying to us.
